What is the I Ching?
The I Ching is a cherished book of ancient Chinese wisdom that serves as an oracle that can give us understanding and guidance on our journey through life.
The I Ching is possibly the oldest book in the world, originating more than 2500 years ago, and may be the world’s most ancient oracle. It represents the collected experience of sages, mediums, diviners and visionaries over millenniums, as well as the primordial oral traditions that preceded written forms. In the past, the I Ching was used by kings and emperors to help with questions of governance, and also by lawyers to help define the essential elements of a case. Today, the I Ching can provide guidance in practical matters, such as issues concerning business, relationships, and family, as well as identify physical, emotional and spiritual imbalances.
How can it help us?
The I Ching is also called “The Book of Changes,” and it tells us that change is the only constant in life. We all tend to fear change, but change is part of the human condition, and the I Ching can help us in managing life’s changes. As we change over time, and all around us we see our culture and society change too, we can consult the steadying influence of this oracle which holds its original pristine essence and wisdom. The I Ching oracle is like a wellspring of pure water, from which anyone can drink, and it never runs dry.
How does it work?
When you consult the I Ching oracle, you first contemplate what you need to know or formulate a question, and then you will cast your oracle by tossing three coins six times and noting how they fall. Each formation of heads/tails has a special meaning, with the patterns representing a combination of Yin and Yang. “Heads” symbolizes Yang, an expanding energy, and “tails” symbolizes the opposite energy, Yin. Yang and Yin can be understood as opposites, such as light and dark, day and night, male and female, on and off, cause and effect, and so on—in essence, they are the nature of the Universe. It is the varying combinations of the coin tosses that provides the information to be interpreted by a gifted practitioner. It is not simply “chance” that divines your hexagram, and the concept of synchronicity, which explains that chance is not merely random, as outlined by Carl Jung in his forward to the Wilhelm/Baynes translation of the I Ching, can help explain why the answer connects with relevance to the question.
What can I expect from an I Ching Reading?

Katherine Bloom has been reading and studying the I Ching since she was fourteen years old. While visiting a local bookstore on a fateful day after school, she was led to pick up a box of “I Ching Cards”, which she bought with her earnings from working at a donut shop, and became instantly enthralled. “I began a search, which led me to the various books and translations of the I Ching, as well as to books by contemporary authors who have written extensively about it, such as Joseph Murphy, in his book “The Secrets of the I Ching”, and also have studied historic and archaic writings on the subject of the I Ching, and I continue researching to this day. Besides being an artist and composer, I have been giving I Ching readings, and refining my knowledge and understanding of the I Ching for almost all of my life.”
